It was expected that Yamaha would make a leap towards the electric, but the brand surprises with a hybrid model. At the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, the Japanese manufacturer presented the FZ-S Hybrid, a small roadster of 149 cc that uses an electric system to improve its performance and save on fuel. A smart move to conquer the Indian market. What does this model really offer? Is it a revolution or just a marketing trick? We unravel all the details here!
An intriguing engine
Under the tank of the FZ-S Hybrid, there is a modest air-cooled single-cylinder engine of 149 cc, delivering around a dozen horsepower. At first glance, nothing surprising. However, Yamaha has incorporated a Smart Motor Generator (SMG), a small electric motor that kicks in during hard accelerations. The idea? To provide a small boost when you accelerate fully, improving performance without drastically increasing consumption.
Another interesting trick: a start&stop system that shuts off the engine at traffic lights or prolonged stops. Less fuel wasted and a reduced carbon footprint… Yamaha bets on efficiency, although we await to see how it performs on the road.
Why India first?
Although the FZ-S Hybrid is a novelty for Yamaha, it is currently only available in India. Why? The Indian market appreciates small displacement motorcycles, which are economical and practical for daily use. With an estimated price around 1,500 dollars, the FZ-S Hybrid clearly targets urban youth and those looking for an affordable motorcycle with a touch of modernity.
The big question is: will this bike make its way to Europe? For now, it’s a mystery. But with increasingly strict environmental regulations and the search for alternatives to petroleum, this type of hybrid could have a future.
A good marketing move or a real innovation?
Should we be excited about the FZ-S Hybrid? On one hand, Yamaha shows that it will not allow Kawasaki to dominate the world of hybrid motorcycles. On the other hand, we are talking about a 150 cc roadster with a small electric boost, far from being a titan of power. However, if this technology becomes popular, we could soon see more powerful models in the European market. Imagine a 700 cc roadster with an electric boost for overtaking without worry… The idea is certainly tempting.
