Suzuki, the Japanese giant of motorcycles, is about to take a significant step by entering the market of electric scooters. Its model, the e-Address, is a scooter equivalent to a 50cc that promises to change the game. But, come to think of it, has Suzuki arrived a bit late to the party? In this article, we will focus on this scooter, its equipments, features, and of course, we will give our opinion on its future on the roads of Latin America. If you are also a fan of motorcycles and innovation, this article is for you!
An electric scooter equivalent to 50cc, but not without flaws
The e-Address is the younger electric brother of the Suzuki Address 125. A well-known model, as it has been present in the market with its combustion engine. Now, Suzuki is betting on the electric, and let’s be honest, the transition is not perfect.
The motor with 5.4 hp (4 kW) and 15 Nm of torque, while friendly, does not really compete with other electric scooters of 50cc that are already in the market. It may be enough to move quietly around the city, but it is not a standout in performance. Comparatively, the Yamaha Neo’s seems to be more powerful in this category, so Suzuki will have to work hard to make a place for itself.
The battery and range: a weak point?
The battery is a key part here. The e-Address is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) of 3.07 kWh. This technology is great for its longevity and safety (and honestly, it provides long-term peace of mind), but it has a considerable drawback: lower energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.
In concrete terms, this translates to a range of 87 km. Not bad, but far from the more advanced models. Also, watch out! The charging time is not fast: it takes approximately 6 hours and 40 minutes to fully charge the battery with a standard plug. It’s not enough for a long trip, and that could discourage some potential buyers.
A modern setup, without too much ‘wow’
Regarding equipment, the e-Address is quite standard for an electric scooter in this category. It comes with a 4.2-inch color TFT display with smartphone connectivity, which is quite practical. You can even enjoy arrow navigation. A small benefit is the keyless ignition, total modernity, right?
An interesting feature is the reverse mode. A still rare element in electric scooters. For a vehicle weighing 120 kg, honestly, one might wonder if it is really necessary. Unless you are on a very narrow street, then it could be useful.
In terms of driving modes, the e-Address offers three:
- Eco: ideal if you want to maximize the range, although you will inevitably lose some power.
- Mode A: increases regenerative braking and therefore the engine brake. Good for conserving the battery.
- Mode B: offers a ride similar to a combustion scooter, with less engine braking.
We are looking at a scooter well equipped, but lacking that spark that could really distinguish it from the competition.
Is the e-Address: a scooter for short people?
Suzuki seems to have thought of everyone with the e-Address, as it is very accessible for short people. With a weight of 122 kg and a seat height of 765 mm, it is easy to maneuver and perfect for those without the experience of an experienced motorcyclist. In terms of braking, it is quite basic with a disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the rear. It is not the most impressive on the market, but for a 50cc equivalent electric scooter, we didn’t expect anything extravagant either.
