The BMW R1300GS Adventure ASA is the motorcycle that represents a turning point for BMW and for the motorcycle world in general. Why? Because it is the first to integrate an automatic transmission, a significant change for motorcyclists used to manipulating the clutch. But is it really a good idea to let the machine handle the shifts for you? In this review, we will break down what works, what doesn’t, and whether this innovation is worth trying. Put on your helmet and get ready for the adventure!
An automatic transmission, what is it for?
When an automatic transmission is mentioned, many motorcyclists get prickly. It’s true that the idea of letting an engine handle the shifts may seem unnatural to those who enjoy feeling every gear change under their feet. But BMW has developed a quite sophisticated system, the ASA (Automated Shift Assistant). It is a traditional transmission assisted by electric motors, one at the clutch and another for changing the gears.
So, how does it feel in use? In reality, once you start the machine, you’re ready to go without having to touch the clutch. The engine is well managed, and even though you shift gears without the clutch, it remains smooth. The shifts go up and down naturally, depending on the twist of the throttle or the pressure on the brakes. In the city, the transmission stays in second gear, and even at low speed, everything remains stable. The only downside is that the gear changing can be a bit abrupt, but honestly, it’s manageable.
The BMW R1300GS Adventure: still a war machine
From a purely technical standpoint, the BMW R1300GS Adventure has nothing to envy its competitors. It is an XXL trail, slightly heavier than its standard counterpart (270 kg in order of weight), but it remains a true beast of power and comfort. With its 1300 cc Boxer engine, it develops 145 horsepower and nearly 150 Nm of torque. That is, the machine propels you effortlessly, and even in dynamic driving, the engine responds without hesitation.
The giant 30-liter tank and the high screen (electric, no less) are perfect for protecting you from the elements. However, the ergonomics may destabilize some. The riding position is a bit more extended, which is not ideal for shorter individuals. And if you find yourself on a wet road, be prepared for the splashed water to repaint the back of your legs. A small detail that can be bothersome.
The automatic transmission: a test in real conditions
Let’s move to practice, with a test on various types of roads. The R1300GS Adventure with its automatic transmission is a true machine for riding. Once you get the hang of it, you realize that it makes your life much easier. You don’t have to worry about the clutch, the transmission does all the work. And even if you choose a more dynamic mode, it adapts without losing reactivity. Certainly, it’s not as smooth as a dual-clutch transmission, but it’s not far off. The small downside? Clearly, it’s during deceleration moments, where the transmission may take a bit to switch gears. But it’s really just nitpicking because overall, it’s very well managed.
