Motos, scooters: a new regulation starting from January 1, 2025, that will change everything

Motos, scooters: una nueva regulación a partir del 1 de enero de 2025 que lo cambiará todo

Attention, starting from January 1, 2025, we will have to pay attention to the noise of our motorcycles. The new CEE-UN R41.05 regulation will impose stricter noise standards. We are talking about tougher anti-noise rules, to keep the neighbors happy. So, what awaits motorcyclists?

New rules in detail

The CEE-UN R41.05 regulation, scheduled for January 2025, will impose restrictions on the noise emissions of our motorcycles. The goal is to reduce noise both in the city and on those little roads where we love to ride. We want to balance the pleasure of riding with the tranquility of the neighbors, although, between us, the sound of a motorcycle is pure music, isn’t it?!

To measure the noise, two phases have been planned. The first is the measurement at stabilized speed, when we ride calmly. The second, is during moderate acceleration, to see what happens. All this to try to come closer to the noise in real conditions. Manufacturers will have to adapt to these new rules, meaning they will need to work on the engines and soundproofing of the motorcycles. Maybe this will bring interesting innovations, who knows?

Detailed measurements:

  • Stabilized measurement: noise level at constant speed.
  • Acceleration measurement: noise when moderately opening the throttle over a defined distance.

Consequences for motorcyclists and the industry

With these stricter noise rules, we will have to change some habits. Those who enjoy revving their machines in the city or in the mountains will need to tone it down a bit. Some of us will have to modify our motorcycles to comply with the rules, or directly buy quieter new models. It may not be what we want, but it’s the rule of the game.

For the industry, manufacturers will need to seriously focus on exhaust systems. They will integrate noise reduction technologies without compromising performance. This will involve redesigned exhaust systems, new insulating materials, and perhaps even more innovative solutions. For them, it’s a challenge, but for us, it could mean even more interesting motorcycles to ride.

Practical tips

The fact that things are changing doesn’t mean we will abandon our motorcycles, right? If you want to continue complying with the regulation, start by checking if your motorcycle needs a review. A certified silencer could be the solution to reduce noise without sacrificing the sensations. Of course, we all prefer the roar of an authentic engine, but if we can keep our motorcycle on the road, that’s better, isn’t it?!

These regulations are not an end, they are simply a change of course, a new beginning to rediscover the pleasure of the road from a different perspective.
