Imagine a bike that combines the best of both worlds: the efficiency of a combustion engine and the instant power of electric motors. With its new SPHEV technology (Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle Series), the Japanese brand is taking hybridization to a new level, paving the way for a new generation of motorcycles. A never-before-seen three-motor architecture!
Normally, when we talk about hybrids, we think of a car that alternates between electric and combustion. But Yamaha has decided to innovate by incorporating not one, but three engines in its future hybrid bike.
- A traditional combustion engine for long distances and high speeds.
- An electric traction motor, directly connected to the wheel for immediate reactivity.
- A second electric motor, which acts as a generator to produce energy and recharge the battery.
In other words, this bike could alternate between three energy sources to optimize its consumption and performance. Clever, right?
Three driving modes for all situations
Yamaha doesn’t do things halfway, and its SPHEV technology promises unrivaled versatility. It would feature three driving modes tailored to each situation:
- 100% electric: Perfect for urban trips. Absolute silence, no harmful emissions, and immediate reactivity.
- Series hybrid: Here, the combustion engine generates electricity to power the traction motor and optimize consumption.
- Combustion only: For highways and higher speeds, it returns to a classic setup.
And as if that weren’t enough, Yamaha adds two boost modes.
Double or triple boost: when you have to go all out!
It’s fine to talk about energy saving, but giving it gas always feels great! Yamaha thought of thrill-seekers with two boost modes:
- Double boost: The combustion engine and electric traction motor work simultaneously for maximum power.
- Triple boost: In addition to the previous two, the generator provides extra power to supercharge performance.
In other words, we could have a hybrid bike that alternates between eco-friendly smoothness and extreme power when we accelerate. Tempting, isn’t it?
Upcoming commercialization?
For now, Yamaha has not provided specific details about the performance, top speed, or range of this future hybrid bike. But one thing is for sure: the concept is real and could hit the market in a few years. The SPHEV technology would primarily be aimed at mid-range displacements, suggesting that we could see this innovation in a range of roadsters or accessible sports bikes.
