La prueba del Sym ADXTG 400: A scooter that redefines adventure on two wheels

The market for scooters and mid-range motorcycles receives a new challenger, the Sym ADXTG 400. This Taiwanese machine seems eager to compete with giants like Honda ADV and X-ADV, known for their versatility and off-road capabilities. But, does the ADX400 really have what it takes to challenge these giants of the sector? Let’s analyze this scooter that, at first glance, might seem like a mere copy of its bigger siblings but hides many surprises.
A look that turns heads
The design of the Sym ADXTG 400 is undeniably striking. Far from being a simple copy of the Honda ADV, this scooter has its own style. With its elevated side exhaust and aluminum swingarm, it boasts a sporty and aggressive look that captivates. The rally line is clearly well-designed, and the overall design provides a sense of robustness. We find that crossover touch between scooter and trail, with a variable handlebar and hand guards that perfect the look.
It’s not only its appearance that impresses but also its small practical features. The mechanically adjustable screen, for instance, is a great plus. It offers a 92 mm adjustment to tailor your protection against the wind, even if you have to stop to adjust it. Additionally, the USB port, located right next to the dashboard, is very useful for charging your phone while riding. A small detail that doesn’t go unnoticed!
Technical solutions designed for off-road
When it comes to off-road scooters, the issue of suspension and comfort is paramount. Here, the Sym ADXTG 400 does quite well. The rear monoshock is cleverly hidden, highlighting the 14-inch wheel and ensuring a pleasant ride, even on rough terrain. Up front, the 15-inch wheel and Maxxis tires complete everything, offering a good balance between comfort and stability on the road.
Regarding the storage compartment, Sym has done a great job. Under the seat, there is a 32-liter space, enough to hold a full-face helmet without issue. And the cherry on top is that you can access this compartment from the dashboard or with the keyless ignition transponder. Useful, right? As for the seat, it has a well-thought-out design with good space towards the back, but be careful, it lacks a bit of padding for long trips. However, for short off-road jaunts, it’s more than sufficient.
A well-designed engine
As for the engine, the Sym ADXTG 400 offers plenty. With its 399 cm³ single-cylinder engine, it delivers a power of 37 Nm, allowing you to enjoy all kinds of terrain. This engine features variable induction technology, which enhances acceleration and power at mid-range. The fuel consumption is quite reasonable, at 4 l/100 km in mixed cycle, perfect for those who love heading out on a road trip without worrying about the next gas station.
One of the peculiarities of the ADXTG 400 is its chain transmission, and honestly, it’s an undeniable technical advantage. Although it may not be the most practical option for those who don’t want to maintain a chain, it boasts durability. It’s more resistant than a belt and allows for better power transmission, ideal for off-road outings. Plus, the chain is much cheaper to maintain than a variator.
Safety above all
In terms of safety, the Sym ADXTG 400 is well-equipped. It features an ABS system and traction control, both of which can be deactivated if you want more freedom on difficult terrain. The brakes are managed by a 275 mm radial caliper at the front, which is sufficient for a machine of this size. And although the fork doesn’t offer specific adjustments, the ride comfort remains good, even under pressure. The instrument panel is a 4-inch LCD screen, quite classic but effective. It is well-positioned and easy to read, even in sunlight. However, you’ll need to use physical buttons to switch options, which isn’t very practical while riding. We would have liked a more intuitive control on the handlebar, but that’s just a minor detail.
