How can I get my driver’s license online?

11

To obtain a driver’s license, you must apply online for a learner’s permit and take the written test. You can prepare by reading the driver’s manual and taking online practice tests. Supervised driving online offers permit preparation courses and driver training courses before you take the practical test.

The online driving test

The online examiner will give you instructions on how to receive the results of your test. If you pass the test, you will be able to get online a provisional permit that will allow you to drive. Please note that the provisional permit must be kept along with the learner’s permit until the new permit arrives.

For a class D, class DJ, and class E permit, the expiration date of your online learner’s permit becomes the expiration date of your driver’s license. Together, the learner’s permit and the driver’s license are valid for a maximum of 5 years. When you apply for both a learner’s permit and a driver’s license, you pay the fee corresponding to the validity period of the documents.
For example, a learner’s permit issued to you in 2021 will be valid until your birthday in 2024. The fee is paid online for a document that has a validity of 5 years. When transitioning from a junior DJ permit to a senior D permit, the date does not change.

How much does it cost to get a driver’s license online?

The fee depends on the purpose of your online application, your age, and your place of residence. The fee for up to two practical tests for a non-commercial permit is included in the driving permit application fee, which is 10 euros. If you do not pass the first two driving tests, you will have to do additional tests.

Getting a driver’s license online based on age

Here are two situations to consider before applying for a driver’s license online.

Applying for a driver’s license online for those under 18

If you are under 18 years old or the parent of a driver under 18, it is very important to understand the GDL law and the restrictions for drivers under 18.
If you are 17 years old, you can get the license for seniors online (class D or M). To upgrade your junior license to a senior license, send your junior license and the completion certificate you received from your instructor to a DMV office! You must submit the certificate and junior license to receive the senior license.

If you do not change your novice driver’s permit for a senior driver’s permit, you will be subject to the restrictions for novice drivers until you turn 18, even if you have the completion certificate. You can also present the certificate along with the young license to the license examiner during the practical test.

Applying for a driver’s license online at 18 years old

Once you pass the online driving test, you will receive a revoked driver’s permit, and you will have a probationary period of 6 months. During this period, your license will be suspended for 60 days if you are convicted of any of the following violations:

  • speeding;
  • participating in a speed contest; or
  • reckless driving;
  • tailgating;
  • using a mobile phone;
  • using a portable electronic device (e.g., a smartphone or tablet);
  • two other traffic violations.

Once the suspension period ends, you will have a second probationary period of 6 months. If you are convicted of any of the above violations (or two other traffic violations) during the second probationary period, your permit will be revoked for at least 6 months. When the revocation period finishes, you must complete a new probationary period of 6 months.
