As part of its “Renaulution” strategy to make Renault a leader in electrification by 2025, the Renault 5 electric car prototype was unveiled in January 2021. The
Renault 5
is
an important part of the French company’s “New Wave” plan to become a brand of technology, services, and clean energy. Here you have all the information about the low-cost electric car project from Renault

The chic design of the electric Renault 5!

The Renault 5 is based on the original R5 model from the early 1970s and is designed with modern lines and design elements. The Renault 5 prototype features some interesting design elements, such as the location of the charging flap on the hood, the illuminated front and rear logos, and the aerodynamic fins integrated into the front fog lights that act as daytime running lights.

Envision EASC will provide Renault with effective and affordable solutions for its CMF BEV vehicles. Some of the most attractive details include the “5” symbol marked on various parts of the car, such as the rear logo, the wheels, and the side grille, as well as the embossed French flag on the mirrors.

CMF-BEV manufacturing and architecture of the electric Renault 5!

According to a press release from Renault dated June 9, 2021, the E-Mobility cluster, known as Renault ElectriCity, is being established and includes the plants in Douai, Maubeuge, and Ruitz, all located in northern France. The production of the Renault 5 will be handled by the Douai plant.

The Renault 5 will be based on the CMF-BEV platform, a modified version of the CMF-B platform, built for cars between 3.90 and 4.20 meters in length. It will offer significant economic advantages. More than 60% of the vehicle’s non-electric components will come from the CMF-B. Renault could thus benefit from its impressive track record and produce 3 million cars a year by 2025 on this basis.
50% of the components of the CMF-BEV platform are retained from the existing CMF-B platform. The CMF-BEV platform will focus on added values such as:

  • acoustics
  • driving behavior; and
  • connectivity; and
  • charging.

Battery for the electric Renault 5

The electric Renault 5 from Renault will be offered with optimized battery solutions that use high-voltage cells to help achieve a range of 400 km (according to the WLTP cycle). The production cost of this battery will be less than 85 euros/kWh. The aerodynamic performance of the CMF-BEV cars will be good, which will translate into lower energy consumption. Additionally, CMF-BEV models will be equipped with a battery pack of over 50 kWh.

Renault will also work on improving battery pack performance starting in 2024. As part of this plan, the range of electric vehicles will be increased, thanks to a new generation of algorithms and software. The new battery pack will also be fully compatible with ASIL-D, to ensure the best safety, integrated cooling, and wireless BMS. Renault will also be able to reduce the cost of the battery by using smaller parts.

Price and launch date of the electric Renault 5!

The Renault 5 will be one of the 10 new battery electric vehicles from the Renault Group by 2025. Renault has stated that the Renault 5 will cost 33% less than the Renault Zoe. This sets the starting price at around 25,000 euros in France.

The global launch of the Renault 5 will begin in early 2024 and will compete with cars like the VW ID2, the Nissan Micra EV, and the Cupra Urban Rebel!
